History of Polish Pottery
Boleslawiec stoneware can be dated as far back as medieval times. It was created in the German province of Silesia, now a part of Poland. Inspired by the peacock feather, farmers were instrumental in creating a statement of strength and beauty in each piece of their tableware. In the 18th century the introduction of a new method of glazes, sponging techniques and decorations made this pottery very desirable, even by the royal courts of Europe. By the end of the 1800’s with increasing industrialization and competition the ceramic school was founded in Boleslawiec, which allowed for educated craftsmen and artists. Soon to follow was the art movement of the early 1900’s; during this time the “peacock eye” became a recognized trademark of the sponge technique.
Now the artist and designers come from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw. This school reflects the finest tradition of the regions artistic craft. Ceramika Artystyczna has always chosen only the best of craftsmen. “Artistic Ceramics” is the company that produces the most sophisticated and world recognized patterns, in time honored traditional forms.
Today in Boleslawiec, a small village in Poland, skilled artisans still individually handcraft and hand paint each piece with the same unique stamp technique use for over 400 years, preserving the charm of Old Central Europe. Master artists produce “Unikat” or “Signature” pieces. These pieces have designs that are individual to each artist. Each of the artists has a different story to tell and their stories can be read in their art. Since all pieces are hand crafted each piece varies in design, pattern and color.

Special Ordering It is rare or unheard of for a company to offer its customers the ability to place an order for a pattern created in years past, especially in the dinnerware and bakeware lines. Most companies produce only a few patterns a year and then just when you have made a purchase and are looking to add additional items, you find out that the patterns have been discontinued! Well, not with Polish Pottery from Ceramika Artystyczna. There are over 4000 patterns and none of them have been discontinued! Recently I had a customer ask if the pottery was just stored in a warehouse and pulled when we placed an order. No, that is not the case, all of the pottery is formed, hand stamped, hand painted, signed (Signature/Unikat Series), and inspected after they receive our order. Depending on the size of our order the creation process usually takes 3 to 4 months. After the pottery has been specially made for you then it must be transported from Poland to a port in the U.S. The journey is a long one; it takes 3 to 4 weeks by water. When the stoneware hits land again, it must clear customs and then it is trucked via FedEx freight to Texas, taking yet another 2 to 3 weeks. Once we have the pottery in our possession we unpack and inspect each individual piece before we contact you. You can see how it sometimes takes 6 months or more for your custom order to arrive, but according to many of our customers it is well worth the wait! If you have a pattern you prefer and would like to add more pieces of that pattern just email or call us to place your order. We would be happy to help you complete your collection, even one piece at a time. |
